hemlocke springs announces debut album, shares “head, shoulders, knees and ankles”

“head, shoulders, knees and ankles” is taken from hemlocke springs' upcoming debut album, the apple tree under the sea, out February 13 via AWAL.

hemlocke springs first introduced us to her bold and imaginative sound with Going…Going…Gone! in 2023, an EP that included “enknee1,” a track we proudly named the best song of that year. The project felt like a door cracked open into her colorful, playful and left-of-center universe, and now she’s ready to let us step even further inside.

Her debut album, the apple tree under the sea, is officially on the way. The project was teased earlier this year with its great lead single “the beginning of the end.” Speaking about the concept behind the record, she explained: “I grew up very religiously—Christianity is very pertinent in Nigerian culture and the Black community—and I was also obedient to my elders. This album starts with a character going through the desert who says, ‘I’m going to do your will.’ They could be saying it to God or a man, but then they come across the apple. It’s about me being in this bubble, and realizing that being in that bubble was tougher than I thought, and then finally getting out and exploring who I really am.”

To celebrate the album news, she’s also unveiled a brand-new single, “head, shoulders, knees and ankles.” It’s a dizzying, eccentric pop cut packed with relentless energy, sharp beats, and a chorus that feels both chaotic and irresistible. The track is spooky, theatrical, and full of personality, channeling the offbeat charm that makes hemlocke springs one of pop’s most exciting new voices.
