Marci finds a country twang on “Liquid Heartbeat”

"Liquid Heartbeat" is taken from Marci's Mask Lady and Late Night Girl, out August 28 via Arbutus Records.

It’s been four years since Marci, aka Marta Cikojevic of Montreal indie darlings TOPS, stepped out on her own with her 2022 self titled debut. That record quickly became one of our favourites of the year, thanks to its effortless mix of soft focus synth pop, romantic longing and dancefloor escapism. Now based in Los Angeles, Marci is getting ready to return with her sophomore album, Mask Lady and Late Night Girl, due later this month. We have already heard the infectious “Butterfly Sticker”, which also landed in our Best Songs of 2026 playlist, and the wonderfully buoyant “99 Dimensional”.

Today, she is sharing “Liquid Heartbeat”, a track that takes Marci somewhere a little different as she leans into synth country. Co-written with David Carriere and Sean Nicholas Savage, the song pairs its boozy, freewheeling spirit with something more bittersweet, as partying and bravado become a way of keeping heartbreak at bay.
