Since they first caught our attention last year with “Wade” and “Drone,” SSAANN have remained intriguingly elusive. Now the Milwaukee quartet return with a new single, “Above It,” but they’re still keeping their distance, and maybe that’s part of the charm. Their sound sits somewhere between the lush emotional pull of Beach House, the nocturnal pulse of Chromatics, and the celestial haze of Cocteau Twins. With this latest release, they lean even further into that suspended, in-between space, where their songs float and shimmer. A space that feels like you’re not quite asleep, nor fully awake.
“Above It” feels timeless within seconds. It’s dreamy without drifting, melodic without straining. Melissa Simes, who wrote the song and handles vocals, synths, and guitar, places the synths front and center, letting them move from soft, glowing textures to bold melodic lines, like a lucid dream unfolding in slow motion. The drums, played and produced by Tommy Behan, anchor the track with a steady, grounding pulse.
Lyrically, the song circles around release, the decision to rise above the noise. “I wrote it as advice to comfort others, but I quickly realized that this piece is also a reminder for myself,” Simes explains. It plays as both reassurance and self-talk, a quiet but determined push forward. “Above It” is pop-leaning yet artful, intimate yet expansive, and it also comes with a video that you can watch below.
