Laura Groves is back. The Bradford-born, London-based singer-songwriter has recently announced her upcoming EP Yes, out in a few days. On the 4-track project, Groves continues to explore themes of human connection with striking sensitivity. Self-produced in London with contributions from Ben Reed, TJ Allen, Joviale, and Fabiana Palladino, Yes blends shimmering 80s pop, R&B, dance, and soulful fragments into Groves’ trademark hazy, atmospheric sound, a deconstructed pop record piecing together love and memory.

Following up on “Deep Blue,” the title track, “Yes,” is an uplifting slice of pop that radiates cautious optimism. “I wanted to capture the feeling of finding joy again after a long period of sadness, entering into the unknown against a backdrop of deep unrest and uncertainty,” Groves explains. Built on a foundation of drum machines, FM synths, and a beautifully affected piano line, the song swells with a gritty yet hopeful energy, making it a cathartic listen.
“Deep Blue” is taken from Laura Groves' upcoming Yes EP, out August 1st via Bella Union

At HighClouds, we’ve been fans of Laura Groves for a long time, and with good reason. The Bradford-born, London-based artist is a true one-of-a-kind: a singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist whose music always feels rich, thoughtful, and emotionally resonant. Whether she’s working on her own gorgeous solo records (like 2023’s excellent Radio Red), collaborating with Richard Russell’s Everything Is Recorded, or joining Sam Morton on stage, Groves brings a distinct magic to everything she touches. She also hosts the dreamy NTS Radio show Desire Paths, which is well worth a listen if you haven’t already tuned in.

Now, she’s back with a new project: Yes, a four-track EP arriving August 1st, and its lead single “Deep Blue” is already on repeat over here. The track is lush and immersive, built around a heavy kick drum and shimmering Juno 106 synths, with Groves’ signature vocal warmth pulling you right in.

“Deep Blue is a song about asking somebody to be vulnerable and reveal more of their secret world, whilst also trying to embody those things myself,” she explains. “There is a directness to the hard kick drum and opening lines of the song – a confrontation and then an admission of deep feelings, stirred up like a deep blue body of water by the heavily modulated Juno 106 synthesiser. My close friends Joviale and Fabiana Palladino join me on backing vocals in the chorus.” It’s a bold, beautiful start to an EP that explores memories, love, and transformation, all set against the backdrop of lockdown-era London.

Groves even created the video herself, a layered, hypnotic collage that perfectly matches the song’s mood. Watch and support below.

“D 4 N” is taken from Laura Groves‘ new album Radio Red, out August 11 via Bella Union.

In 2020, Laura Groves released her amazing EP A Private Road. And her upcoming album, which is also the first to be released under her own name, is just as fascinating. After “Sky At Night”, Groves unveiled today “D 4 N”, a timeless and dreamy single which features backing vocals from Sampha.

“‘D 4 N’ is about the promise and possibility of escape and the problems that catch up with you after you think you’ve pushed them away,” the London artist stated. “I’ve often felt pressure to maintain a strong exterior – this song is a reminder to keep moving through the barriers and find the pleasure in dreaming, living and sharing all that we have to offer ourselves and each other.”

Back in 2018, Ezra Furman released Transangelic Exodus, “an angry and fearful” album which was one of our favourite records of that year. The American singer-songwriter is already back at it as a new album is on the way. Titled Twelve Nudes, the 11-track project is set to be political and to offer an emotional reaction rather than being specific or partisan. Following up on first single “Calm Down aka I Should Not Be Alone”, the artist has now shared two new tracks, “Evening Prayer” and “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend”, as well as a stunning Alix Spence-directed video for the latter.

About the track, Furman explained:

[su_quote]This is a romantic song of transgender longing. It’s another entry in my series of ‘I Wanna’ songs (in the tradition of the Ramones). I thought it was time we had an ‘Earth Angel’ for the queers. Of course because it’s an Ezra Furman tune, there’s a little bit of desperation, religion and body-talk.[/su_quote]

About the visuals, the director commented:

[su_quote]For me, I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend is a music video about externalising the internal. Listening to the song and speaking with Ezra, I saw our two dancers, Brandon Mathis and and Jobel Medina, as physical manifestations of internal suffering. I wanted to literally have us wrestle with ourselves and the complexities of our personal struggles. The video features amazing choreography from Sarah Prinz and costumes by Britton Litow.[/su_quote]

Lowly‘s sophomore album Hifalutin is out April 12 on Bella Union.

Back in January, Lowly announced the release of their sophomore album, Hifalutin, which was primarily recorded in a 150 square meter warehouse, just outside their hometown of Aarhus. Described as more curious and ambitious, the project was introduced with the icy and trippy lead single “baglaens“. After quite a long silence (probably due to some SXSW gigs), the Danish five-piece have now shared a new song, “Stephen”, which beautifully reflects on death. Inspired by the loss of Professor Stephen Hawking, the enthralling single was unveiled yesterday, after the announcement of Scott Walker‘s death. About the track, the band stated on Facebook:

[su_quote]This song was written on the day Stephen Hawking died in the contemplation and sadness of what happens to the world when so many genius cells turn off and leave us. Today Scott Walker died and the feeling of losing a valuable genius is back. We can only appreciate them and say thank you for inspiring.[/su_quote]

Lowly‘s new album Hifalutin is due out April 12 via Bella Union.

Danish five-piece band Lowly are back with a new mesmeric dream pop track titled “Baglaens” which also announces the release of their sophomore album. For the follow up of their 2017’s debut Heba, they decided to explore new soundscapes and the cold synths and captivating vocals of “Baglaens” already prove it. The album was primarily recorded in a 150 square meter warehouse, just outside the city of Aarhus. About this desire to push their own boundaries, the band explained:

[su_quote]If you stick to just what you know, your music, your art or whatever your situation is becomes stagnant. And we wouldn’t like to miss out on anything, just because we felt too comfortable.[/su_quote]
