French indie folk artist Alba James releases hypnotic and airy track “You Belong To Me.”
Based in Sweden, Alba James crafts music that is typified by a restrained almost whimsical tone. Helped along by the ever present ukulele and lilting vocals, her Bedroom Walls EP released back in 2022 showcased her unique and delicate brand of indie folk.
Her latest single “You Belong To Me” – her first since 2023’s “Everything!” – relies upon this tried and tested winning formula. Gentle and yearning, Alba James’ airy vocals lend themselves perfectly to the tenderness of the track. When layered, the effect is ethereal yet simultaneously earthy.
Accompanied by gently plucked strings and the deep resonance of the woodwind section, “You Belong To Me” almost feels like a forest fae luring you into their clutches. The repeated lyrics “you belong to me, I think so” further evoke this feeling, an almost pleading mantra that is somewhat unsettling but delightfully so.
