Horsegirl burst onto the indie scene with their breakout track “Ballroom Dance Scene” and cemented their place in the spotlight with the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, Versions of Modern Performance, in 2022. Since then, the trio—Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece—relocated from Chicago to New York City, with Cheng and Lowenstein enrolling at NYU. This marked a turning point for the band, as it was their first time writing music outside of Lowenstein’s parents’ basement.
The creative shift culminated in a brand-new album, recorded in January 2024 with producer Cate Le Bon at Wilco’s iconic Chicago studio, The Loft. Ahead of their upcoming sophomore album, Phonetics On and On, set to drop in February, Horsegirl has just released the first single, “2468,” paired with a video directed and edited by Eliza Barry Callahan.
