Is Kavinsky‘s “Nightcall” on its way to matching the recent, unexpected success of Kate Bush‘s “Running Up That Hill”? It’s off to a promising start!
A landmark in synthwave and a pinnacle of French touch, Kavinsky‘s “Nightcall” was originally released in April 2010. The track, produced by Daft Punk‘s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and mixed by SebastiAn, also features Lovefoxxx, the lead singer of CSS, on vocals. Exploring themes of solitude and yearning through a retro-futuristic soundscape, “Nightcall” gained additional fame after being featured in the film The Lincoln Lawyer and during the opening credits of the 2011 film Drive, where it particularly left its mark.
Last Sunday, Kavinsky, the actor-turned-producer, was invited on stage by Phoenix during the Olympics closing ceremony at the Stade de France in Paris. He performed his hit alongside Belgian pop star Angèle, who captivated the audience with her mesmerizing vocals and charisma. That night, “Nightcall” set an impressive record, becoming the most Shazamed song ever in a single day. The previous record was set on July 26, during the Olympics opening ceremony, when Cerrone‘s “Supernature” was played in front of the Tour Eiffel.
