Madeline Kenney has always danced to the rhythm of her own creative beat. With a background that spans from neuroscience to dance, baking to visual arts, it’s no wonder her music feels so multidimensional. Since her debut in 2017 with Night Night at the First Landing, co-produced by Chaz Bear (aka Toro y Moi), Kenney has established herself as a bold and adventurous voice in sound. She’s known for weaving rich textures and intricate lyrics into each release, often teaming up with artists like Jenn Wasner and Kurt Wagner to push her boundaries even further.

Now, Kenney is entering a new chapter with her forthcoming album, Kiss from the Balcony, set to drop July 18 via Carpark Records. The record came together during two immersive weeks in Oakland alongside collaborators Ben Sloan and Stephen Patota. With Sloan bringing experimental percussion and Patota layering in striking guitar work, the trio shaped something that moves beyond Kenney’s past work, both sonically and emotionally. It’s an album born from trust, expansion, and the need to let ideas breathe outside the confines of her home studio.
The first taste of that new direction arrives in the form of “All I Need,” a song that feels both intimate and otherworldly. Lush, spacious, and emotionally honest, the pastoral track, perfect for spring, captures that gentle ache of imagined love: a soft place to land at the end of a long day. Kenney describes it as “trying to create something perfect and soft and yet realistic.” It’s a shimmering invitation to feel deeply, to believe in connection, and to blow a kiss into the universe, even when it feels wild to do so.
