The London-based trio has rolled out a string of lush, transportive singles that sound like they were beamed in from another dimension. They have honed a dreamy blend of digital and organic, improvised and carefully crafted, creating music that somehow feels both close enough to touch and impossibly vast. Now, they are about to unveil the full vision of their new era with their debut full-length album, portals//polarities.
Out on 26 September, portals//polarities was pieced together on the road, in hotel rooms and backstage corners, fed by stolen moments between shows. It hums with the energy of places both real and imagined. Louder and more outward-looking than their earlier work, it takes listeners on a trip through shifting sonic worlds, without ever letting go of that signature Night Tapes magic: whispered vocals drifting over hypnotic instrumentals that feel like time capsules.

More than just a name, portals//polarities captures the essence of Night Tapes’ world. Portals speaks to their uncanny ability to pull listeners into hazy, dreamlike spaces, while polarities reflects the dichotomies at the heart of their music: light and shadow, chaos and stillness, intimacy and expansiveness. It is in this tension, and in these gateways, that their sound truly comes alive.
Their latest single, the trance-like “storm,” is one of their most outstanding. Written in a flash, “like a sneeze,” as vocalist Iiris Vesik told The Line of Best Fit in a recent interview, it spins with the strange pull of chaos and clarity. As the band puts it, “Convenience comes with a cost and annoyance is the price we sometimes pay for connection… Sometimes the things we need to do when a storm is coming are counterintuitive.” Watch the accompanying video, directed by Owain E.
