Astro-soul, acid R&B, subterranean trip-hop with a lemon twist… Regardless of how you choose to classify The Trp’s music, “Soak” – the outfit’s debut project – is firmly making the point that every preceding single of theirs strongly hinted at; there’s no point in trying to classify The Trp.

Leading up to the release of “Soak,” songs like “Lavender” and “before you know it” caught our attention in the haziest of ways. As the project kicks off with “Bloom” and “Treasures”, there’s an instant realization that, while the constant ambience and controlled confusion that The Trp have quickly become known for is as present as ever, the psychedelic experience of their music is about to hit its peak.

The Trp‘s “Soak” is a strong, true-to-self, explorative debut

With “Treasures”, for example, we see a subtle level of accessible, pop-influenced songwriting that we would have never predicted from these guys after first spinning their early tracks. And yet, there’s never a loss of lushness suffered through the addition of more focused vocals and the occasional rap verse on this and tracks like “Wings” and “Dragons in the MoMA”. What could’ve been previously faulted as just well-executed music to zone out to is no longer that simple, with The Trp taking full advantage of their first major release as a way to elevate spacy to spacious, trippy to transcendental, and ambient to encompassing.

While staying within the confines of their own sound might be a limiting factor for a lot of artists, The Trp have a style so expansive that they manage to explore the universe without ever sacrificing a shred of their identity. For all the moments where space and ambience are used to good effect on “Soak,” there are still a handful of instances where it’s hard to focus on any meaningful musical idea within a sea of various synths and reverbs. A track like “Dive”, for instance, is saturated with so many different soundscapes occurring at once, that the listening experience almost has to be mindless by necessity.

All in all, though, “Soak” is a strong, true-to-self, explorative debut that infuses R&B with just about as much psychedelia as it can handle. Should The Trp continue to find ways to make music that sounds like it’s working its way around the outer edges of the solar system, they’ll continue to blow our minds.

Drowsy, rainy days spent drifting in and out of a blurred series of naps are a crucial ingredient in preserving one’s sanity. Whether The Trp’s latest track “clinging” is a soundtrack for one of those days or just a sonic manifestation of one is up for debate but, as far as we’re concerned, the song’s undeniable dreamy charm is not.

This isn’t the first time The Trp has wowed us with one of their twisted forays into the colorful depths of “Acid R&B”, and it most likely won’t be the last. What really sets “clinging” apart from some of their previously THUNDERCLAP’d tracks, though, is the addition of vocals from Montreal’s Chacha. What could’ve simply been another solid, soothing tune is elevated into a hazy, psychedelic duet with a tangible chemistry that seems like it might get you high if any were to fall on your tongue.

With The Trp’s debut EP titled “soak” on the way, “clinging” has imparted fans with an even better understanding of the musical niche the act is carving out for themselves, while producing even bigger questions as to which paisley-stained corner of the genre they’ll be pushing that sound toward next.

We don’t know a lot about the trp and about their upcoming debut EP “soak” that should drop anytime soon. Nevertheless, the progressive and secret R&B group shared another delightful and refreshing single. The metaphorical song “Dragons in the moma” was made in collaboration with Chacha on backing vocals and guitar and describes this strange and uncomfortable feeling one can feel when evolving in an unadapted environment or situation.

Louis Cole is a duo from Los Angeles, Louis and Alliz. They are taking us to a funk-pop-electronic trip. Colorful harmonies and strong groove for a compact rendering. From its first whispers of clattering semi-disarray, “soda” is a track that doesn’t want you to find your bearings too easily. What begins as a sea of clashing chord stabs and shivering drum patterns slowly distils itself into colourful harmonies and pocketed rhythms, keeping the listener right up on their toes, while still leaving room for some more comfortable passages that ease up on some of the experimental quirks The Trp are accustomed to.

The Trp’s “soda” is modern R&B shaken up and under pressure, like a can of its namesake.

Lyrics like, “We used to date, we used to fuck, we used to hang, but now we dance together”, add a measure of twisted bluntness to the usual fare. The vocal work itself on “soda” is as multifaceted and diverse as the production, complete with an off the wall rap verse splitting the track down the middle.

Along with everything else the song has to offer, “soda” is also the second taste of what we might be able to expect from The Trp’s upcoming “SOAK EP”. And “conventional” is certainly not on the list.

Who are the members of The Trp -pronounced The Trip-? Difficult to aswer the question as they never clearly appear on photos but nevertheless, the band have achieved to build a reputation since the release of their 2014’s LP ‘Yahuda’ with Atlanta-based vocalist Dos Global. The buzz has been growing even more with their latest singles ‘lavender,’ ‘beth‘ and ‘before you know it.’

Yesterday, The Trp released a new single, ‘better,’ with the assistance of Nesta, formerly known as Zan. As the band wrote to Mass Appeal, which premiered the track:
