Vietnamese-American rising star TRACE shares new melancholic single “Blood And Bones”, perfect for the cold winter weather.

Dealing with the feeling of unrequited love, the new track shows a dark-sided part of her personality where sadness takes it over the sound. The Jimmy Harry-produced song swings in between nostalgic electronic beats and her pensive lyrics. About it, TRACE explained:

[su_quote]There’s something so romantic about seeing someone for the first time and feeling like you know them already – or at the least, know everything about them. You start to fall for the person you’ve already made them out to be in your mind, getting caught up in your own ideas about them. Even better when they’re out of reach or unexpected. It’s a romantic fantasy when someone lives up to your imagination about them. Blood and Bones is my way of admitting that underneath the decorative and detailed surface of me, there’s a truth I’ll keep from you.[/su_quote]

Los Angeles-based artist TRACE is definitely in our opinion one of the artists to watch. She doesn’t release really track often, but everytime she shares a song, you can be sure that it is going to be an indie pop gem. In her new single “You Don’t Know Me”, she expresses that feeling of being with someone without really knowing them.

Going for a straight-forward electro-pop vibe, this new single explores new genres for the artist. In her past single “Oh My My“, she was going for a slow beat melancholic structute, while in “You Don’t Know Me”, she gets playful, even singing ironically “I fall in love with everyone”. About the theme of the track, TRACE told us over message:

[su_quote]To really know someone is an intimacy we crave and rarely feel. When we get that chance to get close to someone, we sometimes realize, up close, they aren’t actually someone we like at all.[/su_quote]

Alt-pop Los Angeles-based artist TRACE is back with “Oh My My” where she shows her lack of emotions in a relationship.

What’s better than singing honestly about being adored without having feelings for that person? After the release of her debut EP “Low”, the artist starts 2017 with a lyrically straight-forward song. About it, Trace explained:

[su_quote]

Lyrically, the song is 99% factual and so honest that I finished writing it in 15 minutes. Sonically, I wanted the track to feel easy on the ears because I knew the words behind it would be kind of cutting–in a way I wanted to put the listener in a trance so they would be distracted by what might feel like a lack of empathy. Being wanted is addictive–it’s totally a drug; this song is about that willingness to let someone pour out their adoration, knowing that you yourself have no true interest in them. But I won’t ever stop you and I’ll never lie.

[/su_quote]

No, really. We’re fucked. But hey, here’s a playlist of fresh new tracks to help you wash that nihilism down! Since we’re both new here, let me introduce myself. I’m Jince and I love making playlists.

Every weekend, Jince scours through hundreds of SoundCloud tracks to find the best new gems by artists that are flying under the radar.

Check out this week’s playlist and our featured tracks below. It features a mix of new sounds from hip-hop to electropop all the way to indie rock:

Soleima – “Breathe” ft. Hoodboi

[su_spacer]
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/309306555″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
[su_spacer]

Not gonna lie, I really wouldn’t mind daydreaming with Soleima. Her collaboration with Hoodboi, “Breathe,” is a laid back track that’s casually punctuated by these amazingly distinct dinosaur-like horns – (lol did i just say “dinosaur-like?”). It’s upbeat without being too douchey, ya dig?

Superior – “I Got You” ft. Rocdwell

[su_spacer]
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/308012734″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
[su_spacer]

As a resident of NYC, I can certify that the 90’s rap vibes oozing out of this Superior and Rocdwell‘strack will stain your timberlands with a whiff of subway piss and other authentic golden-era memorabilia.

YOUNG CLANCY – “ALWAYS HAVE”

[su_spacer]
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/307056017″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
[su_spacer]

You’ll always have the what? The drugs? oh…well thank god someone does. This track is an exercise in minimal synth flips and drum kicks – it’ll help your break that habit…or perpetuate it. Either way, you can rely on YOUNG CLANCY holding you down.

THEY. – “Dante’s Creek”

[su_spacer]
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/309135368″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
[su_spacer]

You couldn’t imagine how excited I was this past Friday when THEY. finally released their debut album, “Nü Religion: Hyena.” “Dante’s Creek” is a downtempo ballad from the album that’ll have you subconsciously reaching for the blunt and a lighter – you’ll be on cloud nine within 60 seconds of listening to this one.

PS: Drew from THEY. accepted my fb friend request – WE EATIN GOOD FAMMMM

Ben Zaidi – “Irene”

[su_spacer]
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/309669518″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
[su_spacer]

This last one’s a slow burn type-of track. It’s a heartfelt tale from Ben Zaidi, an amazing new artist who’s been consistently putting out great tracks for the past year. It’s a sad one, so make sure you’ve got some tissues ready.

Following the release of her excellent debut “Low EP”, we met TRACE

Following the release of her excellent debut “Low EP”, we met TRACE</em for a small interview. The artist grew up as the daughter of a Vietnamese pop star and thus, music has always existed as a way of life. "Low EP" is the result of 22 long months of work and we were happy to be there to ask her what was in her mind just after the release of this debut project!

1) We follow you for quite some time now. “Heavy Shoulders” even made it to our list “TOP100 Tracks of 2015“. For the people who still don’t know you, can you tell us a bit about you?

You guys have been with me since the beginning! It’s so crazy. So, about me. I moved to LA to become an editor for a print magazine but decided to try out music on a semi-whim early 2015. I grew up in Southern California and have been in this general vicinity my whole life but I would say LA has become what I consider home. It’s changed my life living here that’s for sure. I also am a bad sleeper and can eat sushi every single day. I enjoy mornings and have a fascination with the sound of trains. I hate underground parking garages.

2) After 22 months of preparation, your EP “Low” is finally out! What was the creative process for this project? What are your feelings right now? Are you anxious, happy, stressed, excited…?

The process was a mixture foolish expectation and of determined and sleepless nights. I felt (and still do) so new to it all, so it was a lot of learning of what a process even looked like in general and what then the creative process looked like for me personally. But when the EP came out, I felt like it was the most unreal real thing. My feelings then were dismay meets relief meets excited. Now I feel a little bit the same but let’s add anxious to it. Over all though, really overwhelmed with joy.

3) In “Low”, you sing that you prefer “better” and “you.” Are your songs dealing with your personal life? What is the best thing for you? And the person you cherish the most?

My songs deal with what has happened, what could have happened and what I want to happen. Everything is personal though–because it means something. The best thing for me huh? In general, I think wanting better is different than wanting the best. In the case of this song, I think I was talking about the thought we all have in the back of our heads that tells us something is off or not right. But we go with it anyways because why not? The person I cherish the most? Haha. I cherish a solid seven people off the top of my head…

4) What is your favorite track on this EP and why?

My initial response, all of them of course. But I will have to say, “Honey” has a place in my heart. Mainly because it’s the song I kind of fell a part to when I was writing it. I feel the most with it I think.

5) If you could change one thing in your young career, what would it be?

Nothing whatsoever. And if I did it would probably be something terribly unimportant like the shoes I wore once at a show or something.

6) What can we expect now? A new video or maybe some live shows?

Great question. Maybe another video? Definitely more shows. Right now you can expect me, for the most par, to be in the studio writing away. Fingers majorly crossed.

After releasing a hit single over a year ago, TRACE has finally dropped her debut “Low EP”. The release is all about the lyrics, and isn’t for the passive listener. But for those of you who love to ponder, and wander into the darker parts of your mind, “Low” will help you on your journey inward.

The EP defines what synthpop should always be. It fits the category exactly, while still managing all the elements needed for originality. Beautiful and strong piano portions support the vocals and provide a nice contrast to the synthesizers. There’s a definite theme to the synths chosen, a calming change from the seemingly random choices that have taken over modern music. The rhythm set TRACE has chosen for this release is quite unique, setting it apart from the crowd in a positive way.

On her excellent debut “Low EP”, rising artist TRACE dedicates her lyrical genius to the emotion-prone and those lost within themselves

The farther into the EP you delve, the more emotions you’ll start to explore. “Honey”, the artist’s favorite as she told us in a recent interview, is reminiscent of Coldplay’s 2000 release “Yellow” off of their star album “Parachutes”. The simple lyrics “give me something I can keep” become powerful words with the support of the fulfilling piano melody. It invokes a feeling of longing, as if she’s speaking to a ghost in a memory. “The Best” is the final track of the album, and plays off a twist. The opening line sings, “Oh no, we aren’t the best”. This directly contradicts what was expected from the title of the song. I was anticipating a happy ending, but TRACE quickly stomps any illusions of joy into the ground. To add to the mastery, the words “aren’t” are sung with a purposely muddled pronunciation, forcing the listener to stop and think.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/278550982″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[su_spacer]

In “Heavy Shoulders”, which was featured in our TOP 100 tracks of 2015, TRACE speaks of the devil, saying it “spoke, so I leaned a little closer”. It’s arguably the best track of the release, and was initially released as a single to put her on the map. It worked, catching our attention with its devious darkness. There’s quite a few topics the song could reference, one being a failed relationship she always wonders about. Her partner “begs for chances” but she says, “darling I can’t relate”. The lyrics reference faith, and how it “marks a very foolish heart that loses its own way”. Could this be the reason the relationship failed, due to a fool’s blind faith? There’s much that’s left to interpretation, but the ability to relate across multiple themes marks TRACE’s lyrical genius.

[su_spacer]

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/278518993″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

[su_spacer]

This release is ripe with moody pop. It’s a beautiful piece of work, dedicated to the emotion-prone and those lost within themselves. The EP’s single travesty – it’s only four songs.

He has been demonstrating a real talent in highlighting emerging and talented acts and imposes himself as a real talent-spotter.

Bouncing off the wall, back a forth, up and down, this week, Deer Du Bois playlist is so eclectic it will make your head spin!

[su_dropcap style=”simple”]T[/su_dropcap]race is a LA-based singer of whom we were quite expecting a lot from her in 2016, as she hooked us with her debut single “Heavy Shoulders” which was our #100 of our favorite tracks of 2015. After releasing her first single of 2016 “Honey”, Trace presents us “Low”, a sparkly and honest electronic song.

“Low” starts with some guitar riffs to open up on a galactic melody that will transport you on a small trip into Trace‘s universe. That’s what I like about her, she always manages to transform her songs into a smooth ballad that will directly go straight to your heart. Well done Trace, you got me one more time.

“I think we should talk. / I think you should leave.”

“I prefer better, though I prefer you. / I used to be sweeter, but I prefer you.

Have you heard before, the sweet ballad that is “Honey” ? It’s her second single.
Listen to it right here.
