While we’re impatiently waiting for yeule‘s sophomore album Glitch Princess, which she recently introduced with her track “My Name Is Nat Ćmiel,” the London-based, Singaporean multi-talented artist has just shared a dreamy rework of Grouper‘s excellent track “Headache”. This cover was initially featured in yeule‘s cyber dimension λ6e livestream, back in November 2020. Listen to both versions below.

London-via-Singapore cyber-pop artist yeule amazed us last year with the release of her debut album Serotonin II. She has now returned with a hazy new track, “Quand Vas Tu Rentrer,” which is actually a cover of Melody’s Echo Chamber (from her 2012’s excellent debut album). The self-produced track is the eighteenth instalment in her Nuclear War Post series. Get the track via Bandcamp below.

Firstly, albums are not a thing of the past! Lof of people have claimed that this format was not relevant anymore in the streaming era, but the artists below have proven the contrary this year. Albums remain the best way to fully express an artistic direction and a vision.

Then again, it’s never easy to definitively rank albums so we guess that this list is only a photography of our tastes at this very moment. In one year, it could be totally different…

Finally, if you like any of these releases, and we’re sure you will, don’t forget to support the artists. Streaming is a good start, but it’s unfortunately not enough.

London-via-Singapore experimental artist Nat Ćmiel, aka yeule, will release her debut album at the end of the month. About the inspiration for this new project, she explained: “It’s difficult for my mind to stay in one place. I can go back to revisit the person I was in my dreams. I see them as multiple people. Sometimes they talk to me, but I’ve cut most of them off because they start screaming in my ear.”

After the singles “Pixel Affection“, “Pocky Boy” and “Pretty Bones“, she has now unveiled a dreamy new single which is set to encapsulate the ambiguous meaning of love, with all its beauty and suffocation. Following up on “Pretty Bones“, the artist, who is also known for her amazing visuals, is back with a brand new single about dreams and virtual world.

About “Pixel Affection”, she explained:

[su_quote]’Pixel Affection’ might be the crescendo of Serotonin II. It is the sad realisation that your digital self will always be virtual. The nightmare grows into a vortex with no exit. These songs are imprints of the scenarios I find myself in while walking into this place. It grows on you after a while, even when you see glimmers of light that could be a way out. It shifts so quickly, I thought I’d write something a little less ambiguous than my other songs. ‘Pixel Affection’ is like A to B where the others are from δ to 6. Maybe you’ve been here before too. It feels like I’m revealing too much, but I think that’s good. Someone out there might be in the same dream. Are you in the same dream?[/su_quote]

London-via-Singapore dreamy goth-pop producer and singer Nat Ćmiel, better known as Yeule, has just finished recording her debut album, which will follow up on her 2017’s Coma EP and be released on Bayonet Records. As good news never come alone, the artist has also unveiled the visuals of her latest single, “Pretty Bones”. Directed by Joy Song, the stunning video depicts a series of opulent and sophisticated tableaux which should please all the fans of Sofia Coppola‘s movie Marie-Antoinette. About the creative process of the video, she explained to PAPER where it was premiered:

[su_quote]I wanted to portray a “life cycle” to the self. flourishing beauty to rotted decay, rebirth, transformations… The song had connotations of unhealthy cycles and obsessions, and I held on to a lot of things I knew could only be temporary. I liked to see the beautiful things destruct, melt, disappear. Our director, Joy Song is a dear friend of mine who’s also from Singapore. Joy helped me come up with all this imagery to give life to these metaphors. It was really amazing, working with her. shes got all these ideas in her head, and it kind of felt right, to make this together. She really is like a sister to me. We fed on each other’s imagination and made it seem more real.[/su_quote]

Nat Ćmiel, better known as Yeule, is an electronic musician based in Singapore and London. Earlier this year, we shared her experimental and dreamy post-pop song “Pocky Boy” and there are now Rabbit Sashimi-directed visuals to go with it. Like the track, the goth video highlights the link between society and commercialized aspects of gender. She explained:

[su_quote]At the dawn of the new age, civilization has been wiped out by an alien race that can shape-shift into the humans that used to walk the earth centuries before. The aliens attempt to grasp the differences of gender and form that humans beings had, even though they do not know the difference because of their nature as non-binary beings.[/su_quote]

She then added:

[su_quote]The creatures are playful in their shapeshifted forms, putting on school uniforms which they’d found in an abandoned school. With pillows left on the ground, they mimic little children from what they’d learned from human behaviour. Little did they know, the human form is soft and easily malformed by sharp objects. One of them is lost to the ages as they shapeshift back to a different dimension.[/su_quote]

In between Singapore and London, producer and model Yeule cratfs imaginary landscapes and dreamy reflections. On her new single “Pocky Boy”, the artist reminds us of Negative Gemini and Yaeji. According to her post-pop label Zoom Lens, her ambient, bedroom-trance was produced with the itention of addressing “subculture phenomena and the media’s warped intentions of consumer goods… for example, the kawaii / feminine / cute taste associated with the culture of Pocky.” Are pocky only made for women? About her track, Yeule added:

[su_quote]There are six boys on the bleachers sharing a box of pocky. They are watching me walk by and I hear their crunching intensify. They bite hard into the pocky, some using their teeth to scrape the chocolate off the long, crunchy biscuit. They say nothing but continue to eat from the tiny little box when two of them accidentally touches hands while reaching into it. They look at each other… sweating.[/su_quote]
