“Interstate of Mind” is taken from Test Subjects‘s debut mini-album, Study, out November 5.
Emerging avant pop duo Test Subjects (Melody English + Sam Glick) follow up from their addictive debut track “Boy Next Door” with another intriguing ear worm. Like its predecessor, “Interstate of Mind” sounds simultaneously experimental and familiar, thanks to English‘s dreamy vocals and Glick‘s meticulous arrangements, which draw from the ASMR-ready textures of everyday life. The modulation of the vocals as well as the abundance of small sound embellishments give a surreal, phantasmic aura to the track, which eventually ends up with a glorious sax.
“To our knowledge, there aren’t many songs about precipitation or car travel,” they stated. “And even fewer about failed romance, or the passage of time. The cloudy emotions of a breakup, the promising future of the open road, the sweet memories that fade in the rearview… If only there existed an automated technology to wipe away the tears.”
