No, really. We’re fucked. But hey, here’s a playlist of fresh new tracks to help you wash that nihilism down!
When it comes to hip-hop, 2016 is Chicago’s year. We’ve seen incredible releases by a cadre of new talent exploding
When was the last time you rapped in front of the GZA and got crowned the “New York Science Genius?” I definitely can’t say I have, but the 19-year old NYC native Jalib Johnson can. He’s been rapping since he was 9 years old and has been honing his skills ever since. Though light on releases, Jalib is overflowing with talent. Listen to “Determined” and download it for free!
Do you have any idea what the French hip-hop scene is like? Yeah, me neither (I’m in NYC, forgive me). But let me introduce you to an incredible French producer by the name of Mounika. The laid-back, textured production of Mounika’s tracks is like an auditory slice of Key Lime Pie – their songs are airy, textured but still light enough that you can go for a run after indulging (or while indulging? Yikes, I’m really pushing this metaphor, huh). Any way you slice it, she brings a refreshingly relaxed sound to the current state of hip-hop.
It’s Summer ‘16 and the OVO Sound movement is in full swing – Drake was first up at bat, but with “Views” coming and going, it’s time for some fresh air – Roy Woods is that dude. “How I Feel” has the OVO-signee effortlessly weaving through a rapping/singing hybrid that’s evocative of the burgeoning Toronto hip-hop scene.
Don’t sleep on Russ. The Atlanta native has been dropping a dizzying flurry of tracks over the past year – all of them produced, written and mixed by himself. The level of talent, focus and drive needed to do all of these tasks, let alone do them THIS well, is nothing short of phenomenal. This is the first and last time (okay, maybe not the last) I tell you – keep an eye on Russ and catch him before he blows big-time. Discover his track “DiMaggio” and good news: it’s a FREE DOWNLOAD!
It’s mid-June and Summer is on the cusp of kicking in – Luckily, we’ve got the soulful indie-hip-hop tunes of Abhi The Nomad to guide us into a mellow, jazzy state-of-mind with his latest track, “Piece of Cake.” The track also features Harrison Sands and Shōta. It’s infectious, melodic and begs you to put your troubles aside and break out that two-step. It’s the first single off of his upcoming EP, “The Catharsis.”
