Hailing from Lille, where they formed in 2016, Tapeworms built their reputation on a strong DIY ethos. The trio—Margot Magnière (bass, vocals), Théo Poyer (guitar, vocals), and Eliott Poyer (drums)—weaves noisy textures with dreamy melodies, drawing on the nostalgic charm of ’90s influences. Their journey began in a grandmother’s attic, fueled by homemade pies and a passion for experimental sounds. Over time, their music has evolved into a distinctive fusion of shoegaze, pop, and electronic elements. Most recently, they found inspiration in Tokyo’s vibrant urban landscape, which ended up shaping the vision for their latest project.
The band’s second album, Grand Voyage, is set for release on April 11, 2025, via Music Website and P-Vine Records. This new offering marks a bold leap into uncharted sonic territory for the trio, drawing inspiration from French touch music, early 2000s Britpop, glitchy experimental sounds, and an array of new instruments—including child-friendly samplers, FM synths, and Casio keyboards. Grand Voyage promises a kaleidoscopic journey through liminal spaces, blending elements of reality and fantasy. The album explores themes of travel, self-discovery, and the beauty of fleeting moments, capturing the sounds of train rides and airport terminals while delving into the emotional landscapes of its creators.

Conceived as an exercise in pop craftsmanship, Tapeworms‘ latest single, “Pitch Pop,” blends early electroclash influences with French touch-style compressed beats and the glamorous production style of Japanese producer Yasutaka Nakata. The band’s initial pursuit of a perfectly calibrated pop song was deliberately subverted by including raw, imperfect guitar and vocal takes for a layer of spontaneity. The result is an anthemic yet delicate balance between shoegaze and electrohouse, filled with lush synths and punchy production. Lyrically, “Pitch Pop” explores the theme of friendship, an introspective theme that contrasts the upbeat, euphoric production.
As Tapeworms themselves put it, “‘Pitch Pop’ conveys a personal idea of the urban feeling and getting into the rhythm of a big city, while highlighting the myriad of individualities that compose it. In that sense, it stays in line with the general atmosphere of the album, starting the song on a missed long distance call.”
