Harmony Index is the solo project of LA based multi instrumentalist Nico Leibman, whose music pulls from several decades of pop and dance music without ever feeling stuck in one of them. Inspired by everything from 70s R&B and 80s new wave to 90s club music, she produces dreamy music out of soft synth strings, drum machines, warm bass lines and intimate vocals. Leibman has also spent time touring and collaborating with artists including Jessica Pratt and Ana Roxanne, while Harmony Index has recently popped up on Jump Source‘s excellent album Fold, which could very well end up being our favourite album of the year, and True Blue‘s Fountain Edits, released just last week.
Now, Harmony Index is ready to share her debut album Lights On, due September 25 via Peak Oil sublabel FO. Co produced by Purelink and Cesar Maria, the 12 track record moves freely between dream pop, jungle, house, 2 step, trip hop and R&B, with Janet Jackson, Everything But the Girl and Jessy Lanza among the reference points hovering somewhere in the background. Romantic, nocturnal and slightly nostalgic, first single “Keep on Calling” pairs a light 2 step pulse with glossy synths and Leibman’s breathy, yearning vocals.
