In just a couple of weeks, Finnish duo Pearly Drops will unveil their third album, The Voices Are Coming Back, via one of our favourite labels Music Website. Conceived as a dreamlike drift through Los Angeles, the record follows the pair’s surreal and faintly unsettling attempt to grasp the American dream in the neon glow of Hollywood ; a story that feels as if it could slip straight out of a David Lynch frame. We’ve already glimpsed this strange, shimmering world through “Ratgirl”, “Mermaid”, and “End Credits,” and now, they’ve just unveiled a fourth chapter.
Their latest single, “Pillow Face”, stares unflinchingly at the darker edges of beauty, its pitch-shifted harmonies and dance-driven pulse wrapping the listener in an uneasy spell. “Falling out of grace / I don’t know my place / Put a pillow on my face, yeah,” they sing in a refrain that echoes the body-horror glamour of The Substance, where perfection and self-destruction become indistinguishable. As the band explains, “To us ‘Pillow Face’ feels like a quiet scream… a soft suffocation wrapped in rhythm, where the search for perfection becomes a silent spiral.” The song arrives with a self-made, vlog-style video peppered with cameos from Aziya, Es.cher, and ultra caro. Intimate, offbeat, and impossible to look away from.
