In 2017, Imogen Davies was studying songwriting at ICMP in London, but mostly keeping the songs she’d been writing there to herself. After spending some time discussing the role and importance of authenticity in music, she realized the reason she hadn’t yet shared her acoustic singer-songwriter-style music with the world: she didn’t connect with it. It was then that she realized she needed to be true to herself in her art. She decided to start writing the music she wished she would have had growing up, and it came to life as dyke pop princess Foxgluvv.

Her first single, “Crush,” dropped in April of 2017. It’s a dreamy, lo-fi ode to that type of aching, fast-falling love that so many queer people experience.

“I wrote ‘Crush’ with my long-term friend, flatmate, and collaborator, Scott Colcombe. I had a few ideas for the song that he really helped me bring to life,” she told HighClouds. “‘Crush’ is about unrequited love, specifically aimed towards meeting somebody at a party and wanting to be theirs. We wrote the song pretty quickly in one session, and from there we continued writing and working together more frequently.”

On her first single of 2018, “Not Cute,” Foxgluvv leaned further into one of her favourite aesthetic inspirations: 1980s pop glamour. The track pulls together bouncy synths and a downtempo drum machine for a retro feel reminiscent of a laid-back Madonna, who coincidentally is one of Foxgluvv’s biggest inspirations. “She’s just so badass and unapologetically herself, which is so inspiring for me and really drives me to be me within my work,” the artist told HighClouds. “Not just from an artist’s perspective, but as a woman.” In case you were curious, her favorite Madonna album is The Immaculate Collection, a greatest hits album (“It’s a greatest hits for a REASON. It collectively has my favourite Madonna tracks on, so how can it not be my favourite?”)

Foxgluvv started off 2019 with the release of “Expensive,” a single that pays homage to the pop princesses of the 2010s. It starts out with a watery synth, tinny hi-hats, and the lyrics “Wanna act like a brat / wanna be so expensive / think I wanna drink my weight with my breakfast.” It calls to mind Electra Heart-era Marina and the Diamonds or a DIY Charli XCX. Given her three major Leo placements (rising, moon, and Mars), it’s no surprise that Foxgluvv has a flair for showy looks and spoiling herself with the latest fashion (at least, in her mind). The music video features Foxgluvv and drag queen Heiress Blackstone daydreaming about blowing stacks of cash on gaudy fur coats and a sparkling tiara while they work the counter at a secondhand store.

In August of 2019, she dropped the first single from her I Never Felt Hollywood EP. The track is another Madonna-inspired bop, aptly titled Desperately Seeking Susan after the 1985 film starring the Material Girl herself. The track is unmistakably queer. When the music video was released, Foxgluvv told Gay Times that “Susan” represents that picture-perfect rom-com love she thought she would never experience because of her sexuality. The use of she/her pronouns to refer to the object of Foxgluvv’s affection in the song is powerful; while it’s becoming more normalized for queer women to write and sing love songs that are obviously about other women, it’s still far from the norm, especially in mainstream pop. The video shows Foxgluvv in a variety of classic Madonna looks, sunning on the balcony, and lounging in what’s possibly the world’s pinkest bedroom.

The EP’s second single, “Rumour,” was released a few months later in October. It uses Foxgluvv’s signature retro 80s vibe to tell a timeless teenage tale about gossip and the power of perception. It’s no surprise that the artist also finds inspiration in the work of John Hughes: “When I was growing up I watched a lot of 80’s films like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles. I know, such a cliché to watch these as a teen, but they’re classics!”

When India Shore was a student at Berklee College of Music, she needed someone to accompany her for an audition. Her friend’s roommate, Claire Altendahl, helped her out. In 2016 they formed the alt-country duo The Blue, and after graduating from Berklee, the pair’s musical chemistry evolved into a dreamier, darker sound as Boyish.

Boyish‘s debut single, “Brooklyn Red,” is a queer love poem full of cross-country longing and sharp, bluesy guitars. The video, which the band released in April of 2019, features India in bed with her tied wrists being puppeteered by someone off-screen, lit by a stylish blend of red and blue hues known as “bisexual lighting.”

A few months later, in October, they released a video for “July,” the lead single from their self-released 2018 record Carnation. The track leans even further into dark, sultry blues vibes, with the occasional country twang accenting its improvised guitar riffs. India’s vocals hit a sweet spot between soft crooning and pained howling on the lines, “Baby, baby, I / Ooh babe, I’m not your darling.” What’s more, the video features slow-dancing queer affection and more extremely on-brand bisexual lighting.

Later that same month, the duo released “Ghost” on New York label Invertebrate. It’s a dreamy, folk-tinged slow burner of a track that builds up to an incredibly satisfying payoff; in the lyrics, India lays out a relatable list of laments — lonely nights, playing the waiting game, being too broke to move to New York.

“Our songwriting process is very chaotic,” the band told HighClouds. “We usually write by separately coming up with little bits and pieces of songs, and then when we are together we piece them together into one song and write lyrics. We usually love a song for the first week then feel like we should trash the whole thing.”

In early December, the pair dropped “Zodiac Killer,” a slow, glittery track about “growing up while everything is going wrong, big gay sadness, and realizing that people aren’t always who you thought they were.” You know, life. The song expertly incorporates a voicemail interstitial between dreamy guitars and watery synths.

Speaking of the Zodiac, HighClouds has exclusive intel that India is an Aries Sun, Libra Moon, and Scorpio rising, and Claire is a Leo Sun, Scorpio Moon, and Sagittarius rising. All that fire energy and those Scorpio placements basically explain how these two are so good at writing dark, sexy, high-energy pop tracks.

I love when a song’s title really speaks for itself. On “FUCK YOU HEATHER,” Boyish cycles through every possible human emotion on their way to finding closure after a breakup. The track begins with gently plucked guitars and ends on blown-out, atonal synth flares, mirroring the emotional journey and chaos of the lyrics. It makes sense that this is a theme that’s on their minds, since some of their favorite artists right now are FKA Twigs, Frank Ocean, Girl in Red, Mannequin Pussy, and Muna.

On January 31, Boyish released their latest single on Invertebrate. It’s called “Anxious Butterball,” and it’s a dreamy pop track about the physical manifestations of anxiety.

“When writing ‘Anxious Butterball’, India went into a room for ten minutes and came back and sang the opening lines in a weird country/Phish vibe. It stumped us for about two weeks before I went into Logic and made the opening hits to the song,” Claire told HighClouds. “Lyrically, I was driving home and thought about how when both India and I have anxiety we gain weight and sweat a lot, so the name ‘Anxious Butterball’ (Butterball being our roundness) popped into my head. From there, we decided to write about the ridiculous anxiety symptoms we feel.”

At the turn of the decade, we’re given an opportunity to embrace the evolution of culture and the digital age by uplifting artists that can show us what the next decade in music has in store for us. That Kid, an underground powerhouse of glossy pop queerities, is a staple example of true sonic future nostalgia.

That Kid is a product of the limitless depths of the internet. While having been creating music for quite some time now, the independent artist properly stepped into the music game in 2018 and shook all of stan Twitter to its core. Since then, he’s released 11 exceptional singles that differ in delivery while maintaining a textbook definition sound of the future of pop music. The Colorado native built his reputation and following mostly through stan Twitter, an e-space where he relates to the most and has built everlasting relationships with both artists, producers, and admirers of his work.

The narrative of most That Kid tracks exists in a state of fantasy and reality. The opportune moments to daydream about boys on lustry tracks like “Take It Off” and “Boyfriend,” or to remind us That Kid is a force to be reckoned with on “Mind Your Business” and “F**k it Up (feat. Princi, Fagadelics, Belladonna, VisaS2K, and Wifi Baby),” all exist in his digital world of cunning edge candy shop vibes. One thing’s for certain — each track is a certified banger. Collaborative tracks with underground E-Stars like Kyunchi and Ayesha Erotica demonstrate the ear and eye for talent on glittery singles that define fizzy hyperpop tracks, while long-time friend and internet icon Slayyyter feature on one another’s tracks (“Dial Tone” and “E-Boy”) for jam-packed and timeless electropop songs. Whether it’s a standalone single or a track that he’s featured on, That Kid surrounds himself with hidden gems discovered through the internet. An honourable mention must go to each one of the artworks for his singles collection (designed by glitchmood), where a forward-thinking Y2K aesthetic is infused to further captivate you in That Kid‘s state of mind.

The glory behind the successful string of single releases in the past year stems not only from the flawless execution of catchy pop hits but also from the queer experiences he shares in his tracks. Taking the formula of traditionally relatable heterosexual pop music, That Kid casually shares the longing for a casual hook up or significant other with a gay agenda, rather than presenting his experiences and desires as oddities. The queer experience involves changing the pronouns, whether mentally or literally, to popular hetero-narrative tracks to match our own experiences. That Kid does this for us in his music, which makes him HighClouds Queeropedia artist of this month.

That Kid is currently working on his first mixtape, tentatively titled TK1, which will feature 12 brand new tracks, as well as a few fun collaborations that are soon to be released. In the meantime, check his selection and his accompanying statement below:

Like every December, we close a year of music with our traditional lists. After the Best Albums and Best EPs and Mixtapes, we’re happy to unveil the songs that made 2019 according to our team. Are these the best releases of the year ? Maybe yes, maybe no. But for sure, they represent what we have loved over the 12 months.

2019 is also the end of a decade and, even if the blog did not exist 10 years ago, we will try to share our favourite tracks of this era during the first quarter of 2020.

Tim Nelson and Sam Netterfield are the protagonists of one of indie pop’s sweetest stories. Both ardent music lovers, they were inseparable friends throughout high school. It didn’t take them long to find out that they shared much more than their love of music. Tim and Sam came out at about the same time and began to date, started living together, and eventually formed Cub Sport, the internationally acclaimed project under which they have recently released their third studio LP. They are the curators of this month’s QUEEROPEDIA playlist, and one can’t help but feel that their selections are deeply connected to their band story.

Now, Nelson and Netterfield are happily married and part of the booming and diverse music scene in Brisbane. Theirs is a moving, feel-good love story, but it is also one that is painfully aware of the struggle surrounding queer love.Cub Sport don’t shy away from that struggle, they take it and place it right at the core of their songs. This is particularly true of their 2017 album BATS, an emotional and powerful statement on self-acceptance that has lead vocalist Tim Nelson’s coming-out story as one of its main focuses. From Nelson’s earnest vocals to the glossy instrumentals that envelop his voice in every track, Cub Sport wear their heart on their sleeve at every possible moment.

Cub Sport’s music is unequivocally a 2010s affaire, seamlessly mixing up genres and tropes. They would probably be happy to have their music plainly labelled as pop, but there are tinges of R&B, indie rock, or even gospel, such as in the standout “O Lord” from their 2017 album BATS or in their excellent cover of Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam”. One minute they´re covering Yeezus, the next one they´re delivering a beautiful rendition of the electropop trailblazers The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights”. That eclecticism is key to Cub Sport’s success and to their development as a band. Listen to their early, sunnier EPs and you’ll struggle to find any similarities with the soul-infused tear jerkers of their most recent work.

The self-titled effort that they are currently promoting sees them erring on the electronic side of things more than ever and collaborating with other artists to achieve results until now unprecedented for the Brisbane band. Their Mallrat collaboration “Video” could be taken for a (very good!) Brockhampton song, while the Al Wright-featuring “Acid Rain” is only one viral remix away from becoming a dancefloor hit.

It’s no surprise then that their QUEEROPEDIA playlist heavily features the likes of Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator, or Perfume Genius, all-time great queer talents who have traversed a myriad of genres and reinvented them in the process. Cub Sport are not in the business of reinventing but of streamlining their influences, and they happen to be really good at it. Their selection also includes queer artists that work in similar fashion and who are progressively making their way into the mainstream, like Gen-Z favourites Brockhampton or Clairo. Their list has been put together to be listened in order, effectively creating a narrative on the complexities of queer love and on its struggle against invisibility, which ties in nicely with these artists’ popular success in recent times. About their selection, Tim detailed:

The music industry’s precious little secret has gotten too big to strap down. Jesse Saint John has been a songwriter and creative director for a couple years now, working with music industry forces like Britney Spears, Charli XCX, and Selena Gomez to curate undeniably powerful bodies of work, along with launching a solo career as an artist whose sound is as personable as the narratives behind them.

Recently charting in the Top 10’s for R&B/hip-hop and rap songwriters for Billboard, Jesse Saint John has made 2019 his year. He’s followed up from debuting his solo artist career in 2018 with tracks like “Move,” “What Do You Like,” and “Fake It” by releasing don’t stop dancing. life gets sad. earlier this year — a forward-thinking pop EP that redefines the boundaries of traditional pop music and exposes his inner thoughts to the world. As a therapeutic form of acknowledging one’s darkness, the singer-songwriter synthesized what it’s like to strive to be the best in today’s fast-paced digital age, with societal pressures and all, within this project. Tracks like “Wiser,” a star-studded music video with friends and contemporaries, depict the push-and-pull struggle dealt with putting out music as an artist and selling yourself as an artist. With an innate knack for creativity (especially having been a visual creative director for other artists), the video shows different versions of himself which captures his close-to-manic feelings of unsettlement, as he sings on loop, “what if I’m not getting any wiser?”

More recently, the co-written banger with Lizzo, “Truth Hurts”, has been the number 1 song on the Hot 100 for five weeks now, having overthrown the summer 2019 anthem of “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X which comfortably sat at number 1 for 19 weeks. “Truth Hurts” was released in 2017, however there’s a reason the two year old began to chart.
